[Onyado Nono Toyama] 98℃ Sauna & Private Hinoki Bath! A Hidden Gem in NYT’s Top Destinations
サ旅
Welcome to “Sauna & Mileage”! I’m Greippi, a “Crazy Sauna Traveler” who has visited over 300 saunas worldwide. This is the second chapter of my journey to conquer every single “Onyado Nono” (the premium Japanese-style brand of the Dormy Inn hotel chain) in Japan. This time, I visited Natural Hot Spring Tsurugi no Yu Onyado Nono Toyama.
Toyama City has been drawing global attention recently, brilliantly selected as one of the New York Times’ “52 Places to Go in 2025” for offering cultural wonders and culinary delights while “skipping the crowds.”
By the way, as a hardcore JAL (Japan Airlines) mileage runner, I have a strict “I only fly the red planes” policy. To earn my elite status miles, I took a crazy detour: flying from Tokyo to Komatsu Airport, then taking buses and local trains to Toyama, spending over 33,000 JPY and half a day. However, for normal, sane travelers, please take the Hokuriku Shinkansen (Kagayaki train) directly from Tokyo Station! It takes only 2 hours, costs about 26,000 JPY round trip, and is incredibly comfortable.
Now, let’s dive into the objective sauna data and the epic local food you must know before booking!
Moving around Toyama City is very convenient using the local tram network.
Hotel Name: Natural Hot Spring Tsurugi no Yu Onyado Nono Toyama
Date of Stay: March 22–23, 2026
Access: 2-minute walk from “Ote Mall” tram station. (Or a 20-minute walk from JR Toyama Station).
Price: Around 14,000 JPY per night (1 Adult)
Surroundings: Located right next to “Sogawa”, a vibrant downtown district. Very convenient with a convenience store (FamilyMart) a 1-minute walk away.

Room Experience: Tatami & Private Cypress Bath
The entire hotel features beautiful Tatami mat flooring, allowing you to walk barefoot and relax in a traditional Japanese atmosphere.
Room Type: Moderate Double Room (6th Floor).
The Vibe: The tatami mat space is perfectly designed to let you lay down and relax.
The Bath: The biggest highlight! Every single room comes with a private “Hinoki” (Japanese Cypress) bath. It smells amazing.
Bed: Serta mattress ensures a perfect night’s sleep.
Lounge Wear: “Samue” (traditional Japanese relaxing wear) is provided in M and L sizes.
Welcome Amenities: Complimentary water and strawberry jelly in the fridge.
Sauna & Hot Spring Data (Tsurugi no Yu)
Located on the 2nd floor, the public bath features natural brownish hot spring water.
Dry Sauna: 98℃. It’s an aggressive, hot, and dry setup with a fantastic “Energy Bouquet” aroma.
Steam Sauna: Unlike many hotels with weak steam rooms, this is a proper, intensely hot steam sauna! In the morning, it smelled wonderfully of Japanese mugwort (Yomogi).
Cold Bath: 14℃. A perfectly chilling temperature for hardcore sauna lovers.
Resting Area: 4 indoor chairs and 2 semi-outdoor chairs. The outdoor space is compact with no particular view, but totally sufficient for cooling down.
BGM: Healing music in the bath area, and a TV (Japanese local channels) inside the dry sauna.
⚠️ Tattoo Policy:Tattoos are strictly prohibited in the public bath area. (If you have tattoos, you can still enjoy the private Hinoki bath in your room!)
The Famous “Dormy Inn” Freebies
Of course, the legendary free services are available here too.
Post-Bath Ice Cream (Night): Free ice cream bars including Dormy Inn’s original monaka (wafer) ice cream.
Probiotic Drink (Morning): Perfect after a morning sauna session.
Yonaki Soba (Late-night Ramen): Free soy sauce ramen served around 10:00 PM. (Fun fact: It was so popular during my stay that they ran out of ceramic bowls and served mine in a plastic one!)
Epic Local Seafood Breakfast Buffet
The ultimate highlight of the Nono brand. Because it was a busy holiday weekend, the hotel kindly opened the breakfast venue 30 minutes early at 6:00 AM.
Toyama Local Specialties: Marinated Firefly Squid (Hotaruika), local red Kamaboko (fish cake), and Tara-jiru (cod soup).
Desserts: Great selection including custard-filled mochi (Daifuku).
Izakaya Hopping in Sogawa District
The hotel is surrounded by great local dining options. I visited two fantastic Izakayas.
1st Stop: “Roppu” A stylish spot just 3 minutes from the hotel. The seared mackerel and “Firefly squid & butterbur sprout tempura” were out of this world!
2nd Stop: “Nidaime Maruichi” I ordered the famous “Toyama Oden” topped with a generous amount of Tororo Kombu (shredded kelp). Highly recommended for solo travelers.
Travel Cost Breakdown (1 Night / 2 Days)
Here is the real cost of my “Crazy Detour Route” including flights, Shinkansen, hotel, and local Izakayas.
Transportation: 32,832 JPY
Hotel (Onyado Nono Toyama): 13,950 JPY
Other Local Saunas: 5,530 JPY
Food & Drinks: 11,882 JPY
Souvenirs: 2,214 JPY
Total: 68,978 JPY
For less than 14,000 JPY a night, getting a private Hinoki bath and an epic seafood breakfast is an unbelievable deal. Toyama is currently a true “Hidden Gem” before the massive inbound crowds discover it!
I highly recommend booking in advance. Check the latest prices and availability for Onyado Nono Toyama on Hotels.com below!
